Bring nostalgic charm to your business or personal space with custom retro neon designs created to make a lasting impression. Vida Signs creates handcrafted illuminated pieces that blend nostalgic appeal with modern craftsmanship for businesses and homes across NYC.
There’s something about walking past a storefront with a neon sign buzzing in the window that just stops people in their tracks. Maybe it’s nostalgia, maybe it’s the glow against the sidewalk at night; whatever it is, it works.
At Vida Signs, we build custom light-up signage for shops, restaurants, and homeowners across the city who want that same effect. If you’ve been thinking about adding antique neon signs to your space, we can guide you through the design, fabrication, and installation process.
Bring Timeless Style to Your Space with Retro Neon Displays
Neon never really went away. It just took a backseat for a while, and now it’s back. Coffee shops, boutiques, even living rooms have one tucked into a corner somewhere. Retro neon displays carry that mid-century diner energy, the kind you’d associate with old gas stations and roadside motels, but they work just as well in a modern apartment as above a restaurant door. Clients who go this route aren’t just buying a display; they’re buying a mood.
What makes them stand out is the warmth. LEDs can feel a little flat sometimes, while neon displays have a soft glow that photographs well and feels inviting in person. We build ours by hand here in NYC, so you’re getting something custom rather than a mass-produced piece off a shelf.

Custom Retro Neon Displays for Businesses and Personal Spaces
Honestly, there isn’t really a wrong place for one of these retro neon displays. We’ve installed them in spaces you’d expect and a few you might not.
- Retail Stores. A glowing sign in the window does double duty, it’s branding and decor at once. Storefronts with one tend to get more foot traffic.
- Restaurants and Bars. This is probably our most common request. A sign behind the bar or near the entrance sets the tone before a customer even orders a drink.
- Salons and Studios. Smaller spaces benefit a lot from this kind of lighting. It photographs beautifully too, which matters more than people realize once social media gets involved.
- Home Décor and Game Rooms. We get a surprising number of residential orders. Game rooms, home bars, even the occasional nursery. People want something personal, a name, an initial, a phrase that means something.
- Event and Photo Backdrops. Weddings, birthdays, pop-up shops. A custom backdrop gives guests something to gather around and gives the event a built-in photo spot.
Popular Types of Retro Neon Signs
There isn’t one single “retro” look. Retro neon lights cover a handful of styles, and most clients quickly land on a favorite once they see a few options.
- Classic Diner Style Signs : Think bold block letters, sometimes arrows, sometimes a starburst around the edges. This is the look people picture first when they hear the word “retro”: loud, friendly, a little kitschy in the best way.
- Route 66 and Americana Signs : Inspired by old highway signage and roadside attractions. These tend to use earthier colors, reds, oranges, sometimes a faded yellow, and pair well with rustic or industrial interiors.
- Antique Neon Signs : For clients chasing an authentic old-world feel, antique neon signs lean into aged glass tubing, muted tones, and shapes that mimic the originals from decades past. A lot of clients are surprised at how convincing these custom neon signs in NYC can look up close.
- Vintage Neon Signs : A close cousin to antique style, but a bit cleaner. Vintage Neon Signs usually pull from the 1950s–70s era, cursive script, soda-shop fonts, that sort of thing. Great for brands that want nostalgic without veering into novelty.
- Retro LED Signs : Not everyone wants traditional glass tubing, and that’s fine. Retro LED signs give you the same vintage look using flexible LED neon, which is lighter, cheaper to run, and a bit more forgiving if something gets bumped.

Our Custom Retro Neon Sign Process
We’ve refined this over many projects building retro neon signs, and the process matters just as much as the final product.
Consultation and Concept Development
We start with a conversation: what’s the space, the vibe, the budget? Sometimes clients have a clear vision; sometimes they just know they want “something neon,” and we help narrow it down.
Fabrication and Quality Testing
Once the design’s approved, we build and test it in-house, checking for brightness, color consistency, and electrical safety before it leaves the shop.
Design and Mockup Creation
Our designers put together a digital mockup so you can see roughly how the sign will look before any glass gets bent or any LED gets wired.
Professional Installation
Our team handles installation in NYC, including permitting for outdoor signage over 6 square feet. That’s a city requirement, and we’ll walk you through it if it applies.
Why Choose Vida Signs for Retro Neon Displays
We’ve been doing this since 2011, and in that time we’ve built a reputation as a dependable custom signs company in NYC businesses actually trust to deliver on time. We handle design through installation ourselves, we don’t outsource fabrication, and we pick up the phone when you call.
Our shop sits at 148 Madison St, so if you’re nearby, stop in and see the wall of sample signs in person. Call us at (212) 388 -9388 or send over your concept, and we’ll get back to you within a day.
Custom Design Options for Retro Neon Lights
This is where the fun part happens. Retro neon lights can be shaped into almost any font, color, or silhouette. Script lettering, geometric shapes, logos, or even small illustrations alongside text.
Some clients want one warm tone, others want three or four layered together. Size matters more than people expect; a sign that looks perfect on a screen can read very differently once it’s six feet wide on an actual wall, so we talk through scale early.
Indoor and Outdoor Retro Neon Sign Solutions
Indoor pieces give you a bit more creative freedom since you’re not fighting the elements. Outdoor signs need sturdier housing and weatherproofing, especially with NYC’s mix of humidity, rain, and the occasional brutal winter.
A sign facing a busy street gets different treatment than one going behind a bar counter, and we’ll usually recommend one over the other depending on placement.
Retro Neon Displays for Brand Identity and Customer Engagement
A piece like this isn’t just decoration; it becomes part of how people remember your business. Customers photograph them, tag the location, and that organic exposure adds up over time.
We’ve seen it happen with our retro neon displays in NYC more than once: a client adds one near the entrance and within months it’s showing up in dozens of customer photos online, which is exactly why neon displays installed near a storefront window tend to get noticed first.

FAQs
What Are Retro Neon Displays?
They’re light-up signs designed in the style of mid-century neon advertising, think diner signage, old roadside motels, and classic script lettering. They can be built using traditional glass tubing or modern LEDs.
Can I customize a retro neon sign with my logo or text?
Yes. Most of our orders are fully custom, built around a specific logo, phrase, name, or design a client brings to us.
Are Retro Neon Displays Suitable for Outdoor Use?
They can be, as long as they’re built with proper outdoor housing and weatherproofing. We’ll assess the placement and recommend the right build during your consultation.
What is the difference between traditional neon and retro LED signs?
Traditional neon uses glass tubing filled with gas, while LED versions use flexible light strips shaped to mimic that look. LEDs tend to run cooler, cost less to operate, and hold up a bit better against accidental bumps.
How Long Do Retro Neon Displays Last?
With proper care, a well-built sign can last for years without a noticeable drop in brightness. Lifespan depends on usage hours and whether it’s installed indoors or outdoors.
Are Retro Neon Displays Energy Efficient?
Modern builds are significantly more efficient than older neon from decades past, and LED versions, in particular, use very little power relative to the light they produce.
How much do custom retro neon signs cost?
Pricing depends on size, complexity, color count, and whether it’s for indoor or outdoor use. The best way to get an accurate quote is to send us your concept.
Do you provide installation services in NYC?
Yes, our team handles professional installation throughout NYC, including permitting assistance for qualifying outdoor signage.
